Wound ballistics is a science which can relate to other disciplines such as law, design of weapons, forensic pathology and surgery. We present an approach to wound ballistics which should make this complex subject accessible to and understandable by surgeons.

The Army has already realigned over $33B in the FY2020-2024 Program Objective Memorandum (POM) to ensure adequate funding for CFT signature efforts. Most military ballistic wounds should be explored surgically to determine the extent of the wound and associated contamination. Civilian ballistic wounds can be treated non-operatively providing they are low-energy transfer wounds and regular review is possible. handgun wounds due to the relatively low velocities of handgun bullets. Fragmentation occurs reliably in high velocity projectile wounds (impact velocity in excess of 2000 feet per second) inflicted by soft or hollow point bullets.10 In such a case, the permanent cavity is stretched so far, and so fast, that tearing The Firing Tables and Ballistics Division (FTaB) is responsible for ballistic characterization of munitions and the development of aiming data and ballistic fire control information for all unguided and certain guided combat weapon systems in the US Army inventory, select tri-service systems, and select foreign military sales cases. This led to the widespread acceptance of 10% ballistic gelatin for evaluating penetration and expansion of projectiles. If 5.56 mm bullets fail to upset (yaw, fragment, or deform) within tissue, the results are less significant wounds that may not cause adequate blood loss or damage to immediately stop the target's attack or advances . This is true for all 5… As would be expected, an accurate estimation of the kinetic energy loss by a projectile is always important in determining the ballistic waves. Ballistic testing has a number of sources of variability: the armor, test backing materials, bullet, casing, powder, primer and the gun barrel, to name a few.
